Benjamin Franklin Award

The Independent Book Publishers Association is the largest not-for-profit trade association representing independent book publishers. Founded in 1983, it serves book publishers located in the United States and around the world. Its mission is to advance the professional interests of independent publishers. To this end, the Independed Book Publishers Association provides cooperative marketing programs, education and advocacy within the publishing industry. The Independent Book Publishers Association's membership of more than 3,000 publishers continues to grow

Named in honor of America's most cherished publisher/printer, the Benjamin Franklin AwardsTM recognizes excellence in independent publishing. Publications, grouped by genre are judged on editorial and design merit by top practitionersin each field. The trophies are awarded to the best books in several categories and are presented to the publishers during a gala awards ceremony on the last evening of the Publishing University (just before the opening of Book Expo America).

In 2014, Eagle of Delight: Portrait of the Plains Indian Girl in the White House, by Dr. Jean Lukesh, was awarded a Teen: Nonfiction Finalist Award.




Western Writer's of America's
Spur Award

Western Writers of America, Inc., was founded in 1953 to promote the literature of the American West and bestow Spur Awards for distinguished writing in the Western field. The founders were largely authors who wrote traditional Western fiction, but the organization swiftly expanded to include historians and other nonfiction authors, young adult and romance writers, and writers interested in regional history.

In 2014, Eagle of Delight: Portrait of the Plains Indian Girl in the White House, by Dr. Jean Lukesh, was awarded the prestigious Spur Award for the Best Western Juvenile Nonfiction category.

Award recipients receive gold, silver and bronze medals and stickers depicting a mother and child reading and silhouetted by a full moon.

Text and Academic Authors Association's
Textbook Excellence Award ("Texty")

Text and Academic Authors created the Textbook Excellence Award in 1992. Referred to as the "Texty", it is awarded to recognize excellence in current textbooks and learning materials. A Texty is awarded for each of eight categories per year. The categories include: Accounting, Business, and Economics; Communication, Education, and Performing and Visual Arts; Computer Science and Engineering; Humanities and Social Sciences; Languages and Literature; Life Sciences; Math and Statistics; and Physical Sciences.

In 2005, The Nebraska Adventure, by Dr. Jean Lukesh, was awarded the prestigious honor of winning the Texty Award in the Humanities and Social Sciences Category.

The Awards recognize 12 Outstanding Books of the Year in categories such as Most Inspirational to Youth and Most Likely To Save the Planet, and to gold, silver and bronze medal winners in 69 categories, ranging from non-fiction categories to fiction categories. Our Regional Awards honor books published with a regional focus, and recognize Best Fiction and Best Non-Fiction Books in eight U.S. regions, two Canadian regions, and Australia/New Zealand.
